Medicare Advantage Plans in Arkansas
A cousin to Original Medicare, Advantage plans, or MA plans, are offered as a supplementary option to Medicare beneficiaries. MA plans are regulated by the federal government but funded by private health insurance companies.
The four most common types of MA plans are:
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans
The main benefit of these Advantage plans is their overall flexibility. Granted, the premiums for PPO plans are typically slightly higher than a more affordable HMO plan. However, many people prefer the benefits of a PPO due to easier access to specialists and out of network coverage.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans
Another popular option for Medicare beneficiaries, an HMO plan is a network of doctors, hospitals, and other providers who agree to give discounted medical care to subscribers. These plans are subsidized by the government.
Unlike PPO plans, however, HMO plans require you to select a PCP when you join a plan. Furthermore, if you want to see a specialist, you will need a referral from your PCP to make an appointment. Finally, if you have to receive medical care outside of your organization’s network, the plan will not usually offer coverage.
Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans
The main benefit of a PFFS plan is that it does not require subscribers to receive medical care within a certain network. As a result, you don’t have to select a PCP and you can “shop around” until you find a doctor you like. However, you should know that a medical provider must accept the terms of the plan before providing care.
Special Needs Plans Medicare Plans in Arkansas
For people who require special medical care due to chronic or debilitating medical conditions, a Special Needs Medicare Advantage Plan may be the plan for you. In order to be eligible for an SNP, you will need to meet certain criteria.
- Be diagnosed with a chronic condition such as:
- End-Stage Renal Disease
- Chronic Heart Failure
- Have both Medicare and Medicaid
- Live in a nursing home or extended care facility
Alternatively, if you have one of the listed conditions or another qualifying condition and are not aged 65, you may still qualify for an SNP. So long as you are receiving long-term social security benefits due to a disabling medical condition, you could qualify.
