How to Enroll in Medicare in Georgia

Before you sign up for Medicare, you have to first be eligible. For most people, eligibility begins three months before they turn 65. Anyone aging into Medicare this way has a total of seven months where they can enroll in Original Medicare.

To be clear, the enrollment period lasts from the three months before your 65th birthday, the month of your 65th birthday, and the three months after your birthday.

Where to Join GA Medicare

To sign up for Original Medicare, you can register online, through your local Social Security Office, or over the phone.

If you’re working past the age of 65, you may still have coverage under a group health plan under your employer. In this case, especially if you work for a large company, you will want to sign up for Medicare Part A, but you won’t need Part B insurance.

However, if you work for a smaller company, you should enroll in both Georgia Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.

When you receive Original Medicare, you will receive the standard benefits required by law. GA Medicare beneficiaries can also choose to sign up for Medicare Advantage plans to supplement their Original Medicare Coverage.

Types of Georgia Medicare Advantage Plans

What Are GA Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans?

Preferred Provider Organization plans are a very popular option for Medicare beneficiaries. Through these plans, beneficiaries have access to an extensive network of physicians that have accepted the plan’s terms and therefore provide care at a reduced cost.

PPO plans don’t require you to select a PCP when you join the plan. This means you have instant access to specialists within the network, without having to first see your PCP for a referral.

Another reason many people choose to join a PPO is access to covered care outside of the network. While you won’t receive the highest level of care coverage outside of the network, you can still reduce your costs if you have to see someone out of the network.

What is a GA Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plan?

One of the cheapest Medicare Advantage plans in Georgia, HMOs provide basic wellness benefits to members of the network. HMOs usually have the lowest premiums, but also tend to have higher deductibles. HMOs are designed to work best for people who are in good health and don’t require intensive care.

Additionally, HMOs usually require beneficiaries to select a PCP when they join the plan. Furthermore, beneficiaries will need to visit their PCP and receive a referral before they can visit a specialist.

Georgia Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans

A unique option among available types of Medicare Advantage plans, PFFS plans give beneficiaries the option to choose which doctor they want to visit every time they receive care. However, there is a stipulation. Doctors and medical providers can choose whether or not to accept the terms of the PFFS plan each time the patient is seen.
